Canadian Zinc's ownership the company spent $45 million, completed 74,373 metres of surface and underground drilling, expanded the resource by six times, undertook studies to confirm project efficiencies, upgraded existing infrastructure, and prevailed in an Environmental Assessment when the region's Mackenzie Valley Review Board and responsible Federal Minister gave the green light for the project to proceed to the final permitting stage. Over the past 20 years, the project has gone from being a forgotten property to potentially becoming the next mine in Canada. The Prairie Creek Mine is awaiting the final operational permits scheduled for June 2013 from the Mackenzie Valley Land and Water Board. Bringing the project to its current status has been a challenge; Prairie Creek is in one of the most scenic Cordilleran mountainous terrains. The project was excluded from the recently expanded Nahanni National Park Reserve boundary in 2009 and secured its rights of access through the expanded park. The project has been challenged by antimining, environmental activists, but thanks to the support of the local First Nation communities, Canadian Zinc's project could start production in Q3 2014. Much of the credit rests with a highly skilled and motivated management team that has risen to the challenge and negotiated an Impact Benefit Agreements with the nearby First Nation Bands of Nahanni Butte Dene Band and Liidlii Kue First Nation. By putting people to work in an area of high unemployment and providing a net benefit to all levels of government, the Prairie Creek Project will become a model for future mining developments in the north. The most significant mineralization on the property is found within the vein structure. It comprises massive to disseminated galena (lead) and sphalerite (zinc), lesser amounts of pyrite (iron and sulphur) and tennantite-tetrahedrite in a quartz-carbonate-dolomite matrix.
