One area of concern frequently discussed in relation to Mexican mining operations is the impact from drug cartels active within the country. Since the headline news related to the drug wars receives a lot of media attention it is a common perception that Mexico is a dangerous place to do business. Most of the mining companies will tell a different story. The best geology for mineral deposits in Mexico can be found along a mountainous trend known as the Sierra Madres, extending across the centre of the country from the north. If you want to be involved in mining, you go where the deposits are; they are typically far from big cities and developed infrastructure. While the easy money of the drug business has led to corruption and created socio-economic issues that affect many aspects of daily life, the violence and direct involvement is largely limited to participants in different cartels fighting amongst each other, or against police and federal agencies. The employees from mining companies have so far been relatively unaffected by the ongoing drug related activity elsewhere in the country. The fact remains that Mexico is a developing nation and there are dangers. However, despite the fact that more than 200 Canadian companies are now active within the country, in the mining sector, there are surprisingly few stories about companies having issues related to the drug wars. Even as 10 years of prosperity has transformed the nature of foreign mining operations within Mexico, there are still many areas that are largely underexplored. Exploration for new gold deposits is still in the early stages. Large, new mines are in various stages of construction, and many significant deposits are advancing towards development. As impressive as the growth has been so far, it is likely that things are going to become much better for mining in this emerging economy, and Canadian investment is leading the charge. n APRIL 2013
