TYPES OF COAL Anthracite Coal Carbon Content: 86%-98% Heat Value: 13,500 to 15,600 BTUs-per-pound Hard and Shiny Black Anthracite coal is the highest quality metallurgical coal representing just 1% of world coal reserves. It is the most versatile coal, suitable for use in a broad range of steel making and metallurgical processes. It is the preferred coal for gasification and liquefaction technologies, plastics and high quality synthetic fuels. Bituminous Coal Carbon Content: 45%-86% Heat Value: 11,000 to 15,000 BTUs-per-pound Dark and Hard Bituminous coal is considered a sedimentary rock because is a product of the deep burial and compaction of plant and mineral matter. It is usually black, sometimes dark brown, often with well-defined bands of bright and dull material. Evaluating mining investment opportunities? Although its heat value is lower, this coal generally has a lower sulfur content than other types which makes it cleaner burning. Lignite Coal Carbon Content 25%-35% Heat Value: 5,000 to 8,300 BTUs-per-pound Brown and Soft Lignite, or brown coal, is a geologically young coal and is mainly used for electric power generation. Because of its low energy density, lignite coal is inefficient to transport and is not traded extensively on the world market compared with higher coal grades. It is often burned in power stations constructed very close to mines, socalled mine mouth power plants. Sources: www.theenergylibrary.com and Fortune Minerals Ltd. JUNE 2013 www.resourceworld.com 35
