[MOS-NYSE], each produce about 14%.
Blady says there is increasing exploration taking place in parts of the world,
such as the Amazon Basin in Brazil, that lie
outside the traditional producing areas but
are closer to the large consuming centres.
"The reason is the high cost of transportation and logistics," Blady said. "Brazil,
India and China are all looking for potash
closer to home."
PotashCorp's senior director of public affairs, Bill Johnson, says potash is
shipped by the tonne in bulk granular form from Saskatchewan to markets
around the world. "We ship potash by
rail to the US corn belt, and, through
Canpotex, to export markets in China,
South East Asia, India and Brazil," he said.
"From Saskatchewan it is shipped by rail
to Vancouver or Portland and then put
on bulk freighters." Canpotex Ltd.,
which was established in 1972, is the
exclusive offshore marketing company for three Saskatchewan potash
producers: Agrium Inc. [AGU-TSX, NYSE];
Mosaic Canada Crop Nutrition, LP, a
subsidiary of The Mosaic Company; and
PotashCorp.
Johnson says salt is produced at its potash mines in New Brunswick, but none in
its mines in Saskatchewan. Saskatchewan
has Canada's largest potash reserves.
Johnson says potash mining is "incredibly important" to the Saskatchewan
and Canadian economies. "PotashCorp is
expanding its operations in Canada," he
said. "We're spending a total of $8.2 billion, $6.1 billion of that in Saskatchewan.
That's a lot of money in a province of one
million people; about $6,000 per person.
That helps explain why the Saskatchewan
economy has been doing so well." n
