Once again I had the privilege of being invited to join the Yukon Media Tour. It's an annual trip sponsored by the Government of Yukon with the goal of giving the media an overview of what is happening in the exploration and mining sector there. It is always impressive to see how committed Yukon's Government is to supporting the Yukon lead industry, especially in these times of bleak economics in the metals market. And it is always interesting to see what's happening on the ground in that mining-oriented territory. Government support of the mining industry is just one of the many advantages to exploring and mining in the Yukon. The Fraser institute has ranked the Yukon as the 8th best jurisdiction for the resource industry. A huge advantage to doing business in the territory is that there are no geopolitical risks associated with mining in the Yukon; it is a safe and secure place for mining companies and miners. Most First Nations land claims have been settled and the community is made up of miners and businesses that benefit from mining or tourism that embraces and celebrates its colourful mining history. The permitting process is more streamlined than the process in most other jurisdictions. There is still a lot of exploration potential there; the Yukon is richly endowed with mineral wealth. Over the past few years, companies have contributed to a wider understanding of the unique and complex geology in the Yukon. UBC is currently working with companies in the Yukon on the MDRU (Mineral Deposit Research Unit) Dawson Range Yukon Gold Project. The MDRU of UBC describes the project as "a large, two-year, industry-supported, multi-disciplinary, research project to generate information to increase exploration success and to provide knowledge to enhance regional targeting and property acquisitions." The day after the Dawson Rocks 2013 Conference, around 40 geologists participated in a field trip where they shared the information that the MDRU had gathered.
