AN EMERGING COMPANY IN THE OIL & GAS SERVICES SERCTOR MININGWORLD A member of the AdvanTec Global Innovations group of companies, Maple Ridge, British Columbia-based Surround Technologies Inc. is a custom designer and manufacturer of equipment and employee enclosures for mining operations and oil & gas facilities. The company has a novel approach to sav- ing money and construction time. Enclosures are designed and built at their Maple Ridge plant, then shipped to the job site, as opposed to building them from scratch at the job site. "We are able to assemble and ship an enclosure as a single piece; about 20% of projects are shipped in multiple sections," said Anthony Van Grol, General Manager. "We can utilize standard-size pieces to add efficiencies, but everything is based on project specs and the customer's unique requirements." Some of the enclosures include substations, communica- tion modules, backup and prime power generation modules, sound attenuation enclosures for extreme-duty applications, diesel fuel tank enclosures, process and operator control rooms. Surround Technologies, which has been in business for 22 years and has 50 employees, also builds operator and computer control cabins, hanging crane cabs, E-Houses, trailer units and, basically, any kind of special enclosure that a client needs. Van Grol told Resource World that they use materials best suited to the project, primarily steel, aluminum and satin- coated steel. "Everything depends on the environment and the cus- tomer's needs. The buildings are designed to meet the tough weather conditions of the particular site where the buildings will be utilized. For example, we will seam weld roofs, and structurally design based on snow loading, and on wind and seismic conditions," said Van Grol. While Surround Technologies primarily serves western North America, the company also ships its enclosures to cli- ents around the world. "From a flat piece of material to a fully integrated E-house, you can plan on about 16 weeks for completion," said Van Grol. "In addition, enclosures are built to meet electrical specs based on the customers' requirements and to meet UL/CSA codes." One nearby installation is at the Copper Mountain Mine near Princeton, BC where Surround completed two pump houses for Copper Mountain Mining Corp. n A typical Surround Technologies custom designed enclosure.
