[SDM-ASX] was recently awarded a US $134 million Engineer, Procure and Construct (EPC) contract for the Aurora gold project in Guyana, South America, flagship project of Guyana Goldfields Inc. [GUY-TSX]. The contract will be completed under a joint venture with Graña y Montero, a leading South American constructor. The project is scheduled to attain com- mercial production by mid-2015 and is expected to produce 3.29 million ounces of gold, averaging 194,000 ounces per year over an initial 17-year mine life from its 1.75 million tonne-per-year plant. Peter Watson, recently appointed Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, told Resource World, "Sedgman's business model covers all project phases, from con- cept, pre-feasibility and design through to construction, commissioning and operations. We are expanding our service offering within this 'Create, Build, Operate' business model and at every stage of a proj- ect life cycle we are focused on adding value by driving efficiency and productivity. Sedgman will continue to use innovative project delivery approaches with flexible technical and commercial options which are responsive to client needs. Our core offer- ing remains lump sum EPC project delivery which provides assurance (both cost and time) for our clients." The company has designed and built processing facilities for various mineral sectors, including gold, copper, limestone, coal, iron ore, tin, silver-lead-zinc and ura- nium. In addition to the processing plants, Sedgman also engineers the handling of bulk materials from pit to port, earth- works, roads, drainage, infrastructure and associated services. Clients include emerg- ing mining companies as well as many of the world's biggest mining companies such as Rio Tinto, BHP Billiton, Newmont, Vale and Xstrata/Glencore. "Sedgman's core business is global min- erals," Watson explained. "Our strategy draws on the strength of Sedgman's 35-year history and harnesses our core technical capability and commercial knowledge to deliver effective, tailored solutions for our clients. We have a renewed focus on sup- porting our clients across the value chain from resource determination, optimum project design, assured project delivery and operations support." Sedgman has offices in Australia as well as Beijing, Shanghai, Mongolia, Chile, Vancouver and Johannesburg. "We are targeting specific sectors globally based on growth within the minerals market," said Watson. "Our regions outside of Australia – Canada, the Americas, Africa and Asia – will have strong technical capability in the early 'create' phase services and will be supported by specialist global resource engineering, design and procurement capability." While some mining companies pre- fer to utilize established technologies, Sedgman has a long tradition of being a front-runner in processing innovation and has won numerous engineering excellence awards for its efforts, including the 2011 Australian Exporter of the Year. "Sedgman's operations business unit remains a key function and will expand its focus to the broader resources sector," said Watson. "A full consultancy service will concentrate on enhancing productivity, asset optimization and low cost sourcing of equipment." Watson added that Sedgman will also continue to offer infrastructure services in its existing market and expand capabil- ity to respond to mineral opportunities and capitalize on the next wave of mining infrastructure opportunities. "Effective capital management is essen- tial to provide maximum benefit for our shareholders," Watson remarked. On the corporate social responsibility front, Sedgman is committed to building enduring relationships and supporting sustainable development. When deliver- ing the Benga coal project in Mozambique, Africa, with the support of contractors and other companies, Sedgman rebuilt the local 700-student school and helped raise funds for tools and equipment. "We have a proud history of supporting the communi- ties in which we operate." said Watson. n Sedgman was awarded the engineering, procurement and construction contract for a new processing plant at the La Mancha resources Mungari gold project in Western Australia.
