[GPR-TSX] is a silver producer and explorer in Mexico that is committed to enhancing and bene- fiting the communities in which it operates by minimizing and restoring any impact on the environment. For the fourth year in a row, Great Panther has been awarded distinction as a "Socially Responsible Company" by Centro Mexicana para la Filantropia. In addition to its safety programs, community initiatives and basic health- care services such as its pilot project in Namibia, Teck Resources Ltd. [TCK.B- TSX; TCK-NYSE] has been involved in promoting the benefits of zinc in regions where this base metal is lacking in diets. Some 450,000 children die each year because of a lack of zinc in their diet. For every household battery recycled, Teck will donate the equivalent value of zinc to UNICEF in support of its zinc partnership program in India. Some companies have initiated programs to better the lives of their employees. Goldcorp Inc. [G-TSX; GG-NYSE] has launched a new phase in its program enti- tled Creating Choices – the world's first company-wide development and mentor- ship program for women in mining. The program has graduated over 1,200 women employed by the company at its offices and operations in Canada, the US, Mexico, Guatemala, Argentina, Barbados, Chile and Honduras. The female employees included welders, truck drivers and forewomen to IT analysts and executives. The new phase of the established Growing Choices pro- gram is a four-module course that teaches women how to brand themselves as lead- ers, balance work and life commitments, plan for career success and build effective relationships and networks. The third and final stage is Mentoring, in which women are matched up to either a female or male mentor who further supports their career development. "More needs to be done to encourage women's career development in this tradi- tionally male-dominated industry, both in Canada and globally," said Anna Tudela, Goldcorp's Vice President of Regulatory Affairs and Corporate Secretary in Vancouver, and founder of Creating Choices. "One of Goldcorp's strategic pil- lars is growing people, so expanding women's capabilities in mining makes sense for our company. It also benefits the entire resource sector." If there was ever a time for transforma- tional change through CSR in the mining sector, that time is now. n Goldcorp has launched a new phase in its program entitled Creating Choices – the world's first company- wide development and mentorship program for women in mining.
