While coal mining may be the primary economic driver in the area, logging is also important and there are plans to diversify Sparwood's economy. "We have many locally owned busi- nesses that have become established as a result of the services they provide to the mines but have then used that as a platform to expand and look to different markets," says McDougall. "We are working with a number of developers to increase the recreational and tourism opportunities as well paving the way for a more diverse economy. Projects like these are worked on in partnerships between District staff and the Chamber of Commerce. We see great opportunities for businesses to locate here to take advantage of the high levels of income that the community experiences." McDougall says that Sparwood wants to build on the technical skill sets that the mining industry has brought to the com- munity and encourage diversification into new markets. "The opportunity exists to undertake this thanks to our stable eco- nomic base. We are keen to take advantage of that to help build a broader base of businesses and increase resilience." Sparwood has just completed a Business Retention and Expansion Survey to help make economic development decisions moving forward, including recreation. "Sparwood has a great selection of recreational programming through our own Leisure Centre and the facilities are really second to none for a community of our size," says McDougall. "We have a salt water pool, well appointed gym and ice arena, curling rink as well as outdoor sports fields and a running track." While housing prices in cities such as Vancouver are currently sky-high, McDougall says the housing market in Sparwood is stable with a variety of hous- ing styles that allow young families an opportunity to get into the market. In addition, The College of the Rockies is in Cranbrook and they have a satellite cam- pus in Fernie providing local access to programming. "Discussions are ongo- ing in Sparwood to offer expanded training and opportunities for trades in the immediate area with the goal of helping to support our economic requirements," he said. n
