60 www.resourceworld.com J U N E / J U L Y 2 0 1 6 mining community raises $1.2 million for Bc children's Hospital at teck's celebrity pie throw The 14th Annual Celebrity Pie Throw was recently held in Vancouver, BC to raise funds for the Children's Hospital. As usual it was sponsored by Teck Resources Ltd. Pie Throw is the annual Mining for Miracles signature event. CEOs and senior leaders from the mining industry are paired up and pitted against each other to raise money for their respective pies. Back again this year, popular broadcaster Wayne Cox was the MC who was thrilled to inform the crowd that the event raised $1,206,704. Whoever raises the most money gets to toss their pie at their competitor. Each pie raises hundreds of thousands of dollars in support of BC's sick kids and total funds raised are in the millions. This year, rep- resentatives from Amec Foster Wheeler, Ausenco, AMEBC, BC Children's Hospital, CIM, CP Rail, Fluor, Finning, Goldcorp, Golder Associates, Hatch, Kaminak, MABC, McMillan, New Gold, OceanaGold, Oxygen Capital, PDAC, Sandstorm Gold, Teck and Westshore Terminals participated in the Pie Throw. A powerhouse performance by the Ted Souljer band warmed up the crowd for the event in the bright West Coast sunshine. Jeff Hanman, Chairman of Mining for Miracles and Head of Corporate Affairs for Teck, told Resource World, "Thirty representatives from across the industry participated in the Pie Throw and soundly beat the $600,000 fundraising goal. Considering the challenges that the mining community has faced in the past few years, I think the results of the Celebrity Pie Throw are incredible. This event depends on people that work in every corner of our province to donate hundreds of their own dollars year after year to support BC chil- dren and help families across the province. The vast majority of the dollars raised were from regular men and women in the mining industry who dug into their own pockets to help BC kids." "The BC mining sector has a proud tra- dition of giving back to communities and I'd like to congratulate all the participants, volunteers and donors from across the industry for raising these funds in support of child health in BC," said Bill Bennett, Minister of Energy and Mines. "Every year, leaders from the mining industry bring a spirit of generosity and a great sense of fun to the Teck Celebrity Pie Throw," said Teri Nicholas, President and CEO of BC Children's Hospital Foundation. "This year was no exception." 100% of proceeds from the Teck Celebrity Pie Throw will go to helping Mining for Miracles complete its $3 million pledge to finish the development of BC Children's Hospital's CAUSES Research Clinic. n Egged by Pan Am Games Gold Medalist soccer player Karina LeBlanc, Eira Thomas, President and CEO of Kaminak Gold, prepares to throw her pie at Dr. Mark O'Dea, Chairman and Founder of Oxygen Capital.
