to US $5,000/oz. I think that this year gold
may test US $2,000/oz and in three or four
years may test US $5,000/oz.
RW: On a more personal level, tell me
about you and your wife's medical charity
in Toronto.
RM: It's called the McEwen Centre for
Regenerative Medicine whose main focus
is stem cell research. It came about in the
early 2000s when I lost two members of
my family in quick succession – one of my
sisters and my mother. During the times
my wife Cheryl and I were at the hospital,
it occurred to us that a large segment of the
population will be retiring and going into
the most expensive phase of their lives in
terms of healthcare. We concluded that we
will not be able to expand our healthcare
system fast enough to accommodate these
people at the same level of service.
Regenerative medicine prompts the body
to regenerate itself and holds out the prom-
ise of profoundly changing the delivery of
healthcare for the better. That's when I said
I'd like to put my money there and see if we
can help contribute to changing the health-
care system – make it more effective, more
available and more inexpensive.
We funded the charity in 2003 and it
officially got its start in 2006. It is now
considered to be one of the leading centres
in the world for stem cell research and is
located in the largest research hospital in
Canada. Our tag line is: 'Collaborate, create
and cure.'
There is lots of research to be done, it's
expensive, and we are very appreciative
to anyone that would like to contribute a
donation.
RW: When you were a teenager, what
were you considering for a career?
RM: From grade two to grade 12, I
wanted to be an architect. About 15 years
ago, when I was putting together Goldcorp
and consolidating companies, I realized I
was involved in financial architecture.
I am still interested traditional architec-
ture and recently my wife and I funded
the establishment of the McEwen School
of Architecture at Laurentian University
in northern Ontario. This was exciting
for us.
