Although outcrop is sparse in the interior of coastal Nova Scotia, both old and new geologic maps show folded metamor- phosed sedimentary rocks, with large anticlinal and synclinal folds in argillitic to slaty rocks. The Goldenville Formation (part of the gold-bearing sequence) is known to host trace fossils of Cambrian age. Unlike some traditional saddle reef styles of min- eralization, with gold concentrated in the noses of folds, here, according to Quinn, mineralization often concentrates on one limb of a fold – however both limbs of the anticline are miner- alized at Goldenville. The Caribou Project is associated with the same anticline as Cochrane Hill, and the Goldenville Project is associated with the Miller Lake anticline. Visible coarse-grained gold has been observed, and very large nuggets have been found in the past, but as noted previously, the future of gold mining in this area is believed to be in dissemi- nated gold. Quartz veins are mineralized with pyrite and other sulphides, which host gold, but not much silver. Some tests have shown up to 80% recovery by gravity separation, so the company remains optimistic that mining will be fruitful. Other mineral companies are also exploring for gold in Nova Scotia, with at least a dozen projects covering about 100,000 hect- ares in the province. It appears the resurgence of gold mining in Nova Scotia is well under way as Atlantic Gold Corp. [AGB- TSXV; SPVEF-OTC] is seeing success in its efforts to revive the old Moose River gold area. It recently started to pour gold doré bars and expects that during the Phase I mining stage it will produce 87,000 ounces of gold per year over a minimum 8.5-year mine life at All-In Sustaining Costs of CDN $690/oz. According to Mining.Com, Atlantic Gold is "the only permitted open pit gold project currently in construction throughout the whole country [of Canada]." Gold mining in Nova Scotia has historically been in winding and branched underground workings. However, disasters such as the 1936 Moose River cave-in and partial rescue of trapped miners have, until recently, dimmed enthusiasm for underground mining in the province. According to Quinn, reasons for investing in gold exploration in Nova Scotia today include taking into account the "paradigm shifts" in modern mining: the ability to mine larger tonnages of lower grades; the trend away from underground to open pit mining; and that a district play (grouping a set of deposits as one larger project) is advantageous to the ambitious explorer, provid- ing "synergetics" among related properties. Although similar gold environments have been mined in the past farther south in the Appalachians such as the Carolina gold belts, Nova Scotia currently has more available governmentally controlled land, thus removing the trouble of dealing with mul- tiple private owners in populated areas.
