40 www.resourceworld.com A P R I L / M A Y 2 0 1 8 O ntario accounted for 26% of Canadian mineral production in 2016, with gold the value leader at $3.9 billion. Today, the province is competing hard to retain that lead with the government recently introducing an online claim registration sys- tem which has already been implemented in five other provinces. There's plenty of exploration and development activity in the province for gold, much of it in historic min- ing camps which is evident in the following review. Alamos Gold Inc. [AGI-TSX, NYSE] is an intermediate gold producer with four mining operations divided between Canada and Mexico. Two mines are located in northern Ontario: the Young-Davidson near the town of Matachewan and Island Gold Mines northeast of Wawa. The Young-Davidson open pit mine achieved commercial production on September 2012 followed a year later by underground operations. Open pit mining ceased in June 2014 and stockpiled open pit ore will supplement mill feed until underground production rates have ramped up to design levels. In 2018, the mine is projected to produce 200,000-210,000 oz gold at an all- in sustaining cost of $850/oz. Island Gold, a high-grade underground mining operation, began production in October 2007 and has produced over 500,000 ounces of gold to date. The opera- tion is currently undergoing an expansion of underground mining scheduled for completion in the second half of 2018 at a cost of $23 million, for annual production of 125,000 oz gold in 2019. Canadian Orebodies Inc. [CORE-TSXV; CNOBF-OTC] has consolidated a histori- cally fragmented land package of 6,800 hectares along the northern extension of the Hemlo greenstone belt 45 km northeast of Marathon. Several high-priority drill targets have been defined by prospecting and airborne geophysics. Multiple high- grade, gold-bearing, vein structures have been established on its Black Raven pros- pect with values up to 109.0 g/t. Canadian Orebodies also holds the Wire Lake prop- erty 29 km northwest of the Williams Mine at Hemlo. Detailed exploration is planned for its Hemlo projects.
