Gold miner offers many opportunities for career development and advancement GOLDCORP FOCUSES ON ITS PEOPLE by Peter Caulfield Goldcorp [G-TSX; GG-NYSE], one of the world's fastest growing senior gold producers, is looking for employees of all different skills and backgrounds. To find them, the company has targeted recruitment and employee development and advancement plans. Senior Vice President of People and Safety, Paul Farrow, says there are many good reasons to work at Goldcorp. "Goldcorp has a proven, solid record of growth and continues to grow," he said. "We have producing mines and a pipeline of development projects that will be coming on-stream in the future." As its name suggests, Goldcorp focuses on gold. "The market has rewarded gold 36 www.resourceworld.com companies in the last decade," Farrow said. "Historically, they command a premium from investors and we need to deliver on that expectation." Goldcorp has 11 operating mines and three advanced projects, from northern Québec to southern Argentina. The company has 16,000 employees and contractors, about half of whom are full-time. Approximately 3,000 are in Canada and the US, about 3,000 in Mexico and another 2,000 in Central and South America. "Because Goldcorp is decentralized, we're working to share our best practices across the whole company," Farrow said. "For example, we're increasing the size of our corporate team by between 30 and 40 people this year." Farrow says Goldcorp has been putting considerable effort into attracting more people. "There is a shortage of workers with strong mining backgrounds, especially in parts of South America and Mexico; but we also need people with other skills, not just geology and engineering," he said. Farrow says the company has noticed an increasing interest in mining from university students in Canada and the US. "We are making greater use of social media to communicate with younger people," he said. "And we're very open with them about the opportunities and challenges that face the mining industry."
