Longyear sank the first diamond core drill hole on the Minnesota Mesabi Range. At PDAC this year, Boart Longyear celebrated the com- pany's 125th Anniversary. To mark the occasion Boart Longyear announced, at an event held at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel, the first mining notable induct- ees into, the newly announced, Boart Longyear Mining Hall of Fame. The first two individuals inducted into the mining hall of fame were appro- priately, Edmund J. Longyear and his son Robert Longyear. After all, they started a company that 125 years later would end up being a world leader in the provision of drilling services, drilling equipment, and performance tooling for mining and drilling companies. The company's long history should inspire those resource com- panies currently struggling in this bearish market. Boart Longyear has withstood many industry ups and downs over its many years. Ever the innovator, Longyear intro- duced a few new drilling tools at their booth. One of the products showcased was the TruCore™. Longyear states that TruCore is a first-in-industry, integrated, core orientation system, "designed by drillers, for drillers". "The innovation behind TruCore improves productivity and reduces the number of parts drill crews need to main- tain a core orientation system which in turn reduces cost. While essential for mapping exploration and mine site devel- opment, core orientation is a part of the drilling process that has only experi- enced incremental product improvements through small changes to the process and equipment, until now." The company lists the following advantages to using the TruCore system. • The innovation behind TruCore improves productivity and reduces cost. • TruCore's integrated housing combined with Boart Longyear parts reduces the number of joints and high wear on outer tube extension barrels. • TruCore's unique core marking technol- ogy allows one tool to always be in the hole. • Wireless communication eliminates the need for disassembly to retrieve results. • Highly visible flashing LEDs direct align- ment, which reduces total measurement time. Boart Longyear's upcoming innovation, TruProbe™, is currently in field test- ing. TruProbe is a geophysical tool which measures the gamma pattern of a mineral deposit to help determine the deposit's pattern. This type of testing, which nor- mally requires an entirely different crew, can be done by the driller. The company estimates that this new product will be launched in 2016. n MININGWORLD New Dimensions REGISTER TODAY A selection of papers presented at CIM Convention 2015 will be available online through the cim.org Technical Paper Library.
