Using a 1% TREO (total rare earth oxides) cut-off grade, Steenkampskraal currently has a resource of 32,000 tonnes TREO indicated and 42,100 tonnes TREO inferred. IAMGOLD Corp. [IMG-TSX; IAG-NYSE] runs the Essakane gold mine in Burkina Faso. It also holds a 41% stake in the Sadiola gold mine and a 40% stake in the Yatela gold mine, both located in Mali. For 2012, IAMGOLD's attributed gold production stood at 315,000 ounces gold for Essakane; 100,000 ounces gold for Sadiola; and 29,000 ounces gold for Yatela. Kinross Gold Corp. [K-TSX; KGCNYSE] operates the Chirano gold mine in Ghana, which produced 293,235 ounces gold equivalent (eq) for full-year 2012 compared with 261,846 ounces gold eq for 2011. The company also operates the Tasiast open-pit mine located in Mauritania, which recorded an output of 185,334 ounces gold eq for 2012 compared with 200,619 ounces gold eq for 2011. Lucara Diamond Corp. [LUC-TSX; Botswana, Sweden] has a 100% interest in the producing Karowe diamond mine in Botswana that was commissioned in 2012. At the 75%-owned Mothae Project in Lesotho, trial mining is underway. A member of the Lundin Mining Group, Lucara Diamond earned US $6.2 million in the first quarter of 2013. MDN Inc. [MDN-TSX] holds a 30% participating interest in the Tulawaka gold mine; two exploration licences at its Nikonga property; and can earn up to 70% in the Ikungu gold project – all in Tanzania. On February 25, the company reported signing an agreement with Metalinvest Capital Corp., granting it the option to acquire up to 55% of MDN's interest in Ikungu. On April 25, it reported Metalinvest had been awarded an extension in transferring funds to initiate a new exploration campaign at the property. Namibia Rare Earths [NRE-TSX; NMREF-OTCQX] is focused on the Lofdal rare earth project, northwest Namibia. In September 2012, it announced a maiden resource for the Area 4 Zone. At a 0.3% TREO cut-off, it has indicated resources of JUNE 2013 900,000 tonnes at 0.62% TREO, with an 86% heavy enrichment. Inferred resources stand at 750,000 tonnes at 0.56% TREO, with an 85% heavy enrichment. On April 3, the company unveiled positive results in a preliminary metallurgical report, including confirmation that thorium can be removed from concentrates on site. Nevsun Resources Ltd. [NSU-TSX] operates the Bisha Mine, Eritrea, in which the country's government holds a 40% stake. In Q1 2013, the mine produced 42,000 ounces gold. On April 25, Nevsun unveiled its corporate social responsibility achievements for 2012, highlighting community investment and its zero accidents safety record. New Dawn Mining Corp. [ND-TSX; 3DM-FSE] has a 100% interest in the Turk and Angelus Mine, the Old Nic Mine and the Camperdown Mine in Zimbabwe. The company also has an approximate 85% interest in the Dalny, Golden Quarry and Venice mines (currently not in operation), and prospects in Zimbabwe. These six mines, five of which are currently operational, are divided into three significant gold camps, and have a combined milling capacity of 2,000 tpd. Newmont Mining Corp. [NMC-TSX; NEM-NYSE] is seeking to complete mine construction at its Akyem gold project, Ghana, later this year. It also operates the Ghana-located Ahafo gold mine, which produced 125,000 ounces gold in Q1 2013 compared with 175,000 ounces in Q1 2012. In its 2012 annual report, Newmont reported that drought conditions were periodically affecting Ghana's hydroelectric capacity, pushing up energy costs. In turn, this was negatively impacting Ahafo's production levels. Orca Gold Inc. [ORG-TSXV] is developing a land position in north Sudan through its Shark subsidiary. On January 21, Shark unveiled drill results for the Galat Sufar South prospect at Block 14. Highlights include hole GSDD001, which returned 1.22 g/t gold (uncut) from 80-161 metres, and hole GSRC003, which intersected of 13.60 g/t gold (uncut) from 101-120 metres. Orezone Gold Corp. [ORE-TSX] is developing the Bomboré gold deposit in Burkina Faso. On April 29, it announced an upgrade and an increase in resources. Total measured and indicated resources now stand at 140 million tonnes at 1.01 g/t gold for 4.56 million ounces gold contained. Oromin Explorations Ltd. [OLE-TSX; OLEPF-OTCQB] announced a positive carbon-in-leach feasibility study and mineral reserve update for its OJVG gold project in Senegal on January 31. For the first three years at full production, OJVG will produce an estimated 182,000 ounces gold per year. Total probable open-pit reserves are currently just below 22 million tonnes for almost 1.45 million ounces gold; total probable underground reserves are just over 6.1 million tonnes for 890,000 ounces gold. Pelangio Exploration Inc. [PX-TSXV; PGXPF-OTC-PK] has three properties in Ghana: Manfo, Obuasi and Akroma. On March 15, the company announced the closing of a private placement for $1.54 million. In November 2012, the company unveiled the latest drill results from Manfo. Highlights include hole SPDD-254, which cut 1.05 g/t gold from 298-315.5 metres. Platinum Group Metals Ltd. [PTNTSX; PLG-NYSE MKT] is constructing the WBJV Project 1 platinum mine in the Western Limb of the Bushveld Complex, South Africa, in which it owns 74%. On April 24, it announced a life-of-mine concentrate off-take for the project with Rustenburg Platinum Mines, a whollyowned subsidiary of Anglo American Platinum. Platinum Group Metals is also exploring the Waterberg Project in the North Limb of the Bushveld Complex with other partners. Recent results include hole WB046D0, which intersected 1.35 g/t platinum, 3 g/t palladium and 0.18 g/t gold from 799.5-821.5 metres. PMI Gold Corp. [PMV-TSX; PVM-ASX; PN3N-FSE] has three main plays in Ghana, with a focus on the Obotan gold project. Recent progress includes the application for key permits and the start of earthwork construction. Current JORC/NI 43-101-compliant proven reserves stand at 14.8 million tonnes, grading 2.39 g/t gold for 1.14 million ounces gold contained.
